Juan Mari Aburto is a Spanish politician who currently serves as the Mayor of Bilbao, a city located in the Basque Country region of Spain. He was born on July 6, 1961, in Bilbao. Aburto comes from a family with a long political history, as his father, Juan Mari Aburto Senior, was a member of the Basque parliament during the Franco regime.
Aburto studied law at the University of Deusto in Bilbao and later earned a master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Los Angeles in California. He began his professional career as a lawyer, specializing in corporate, commercial, and tax law. In 1999, he joined the Basque government as a technical advisor on urban and economic development.
Aburto's political career began in 2003 when he was elected to the Bilbao City Council. He served as the Deputy Mayor of Bilbao and the councillor for Economic Development, Innovation, and Employment during his first term. In 2011, he was re-elected to the City Council and served as the councillor for Urban Planning, Sustainability, and Public Services.
In 2015, Aburto was elected as the Mayor of Bilbao, succeeding Iñaki Azkuna. During his tenure, he has focused on improving urban mobility, promoting sustainable development, enhancing social cohesion, and boosting cultural initiatives. He has also worked to strengthen Bilbao's international position by attracting foreign investment and promoting the city as a tourist destination.
Aburto is affiliated with the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), which advocates for Basque self-determination and regional autonomy within Spain. He is fluent in English and French and is married with two children.
